Our mulled rum recipe will help you launch straight into Christmas.

The orange in this (studded with cloves) is a nod to the christingle oranges we had at school. What do you get if you cross Father Christmas with a Pirate? Mulling, to warm a drink with spices, has been making homes smell Christmassy forever. Mulled wine has been usurped by Mulled Cider in our families over the last few years. As life has got busier and the opportunity to get friends together more special, the need to hit hard into Christmas and a full on festive spirit has become more pressing. Something stronger is called for.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you, our Mulled Rum recipe.

Warning if the serving is too large you might not be able to feel your feet.

Ingredients

2 cups of water
1 cup of dark muscovado sugar
1 dried chilli
3 star anise
1 small orange
12 whole cloves
1 cup of rum

Kit

Method

Stud the orange with the 12 cloves
In a small pan simmer the mulling ingredients together for 20 minutes
Check the sugar has dissolved, remove the orange and allow to cool for 5 minutes
Add 1 cup of rum to the mulling solution you've made
Add 2 lumps of ice to each glass and pour over the warm mulled rum. Garnish with a slither of orange zest (cut into a Christmassy shape)
